Meet Lorenzo Moore, Co-Freshman Class Coordinator

Lorenzo Moore is a Junior Drama Major from Atlanta, Georgia. Outside of his school work and services pertaining to the Bonner Program, Lorenzo prioritizes his time in the creative arts. Growing up as an introverted youth, Lorenzo turned to poetry, and visual arts as mediums to break out of his shell. Over the years, Lorenzo began to test the boundaries of his own creative ability by getting involved with everything pertaining to or of the arts. From behind the scenes to on camera, Lorenzo has done it. Nowadays he looks forward to finding multiple ways to blend mediums for a good cause. You can find him rapping about social justice and other deep topics in his songs, or trying to perfect his newest monologue for an upcoming audition. You may find him doodling in a notebook, or filming a friend on his camera. One things for sure, you will always find him trying to the improve things around him, and he's always open to ideas.

Lorenzo poses this question to his young brothers: What significant moment of service or hard work do you feel defines you the most? What is your most notable act of community service? How do you plan to use your interests and passions to do community service?

  1. I hope I answer the first question correctly. The moment that I see sosmeone else smile because of the work of my team and I have done. When a person smiles because I have impacted their life in the smallest way that's when I can smile and tell myself well done. My most notable act of servivce is serving the National Park Service(Anacostia Park) and collecting over 10,000 hours with them. As I tell everyone it's not about the amount hours I collect it is about the number of smiles or lives I can change in the smallest way. I plan to use my passion for politics and teaching to help tutor young kids in reading and math. Also, use my passion to listen to others and give adivce so young kids have someone to talk to and open up to. I have a vision to help the next generation of leaders.

  2. The significant moment of service to me is the moment a solution to a problem has come or a system of change has been made to make any person, place, or thing better. I think this is my significant moment because I am a problem solver; a game changer. I constantly look for ways to improve my society, my people, and also myself. My most notable act in community service was my influence, support, and drive to develop a young men's mentoring program at my school which in a year developed itself across my district including all middle schools and elementary schools. Out of all the serving I've done, this seems the most notable because I think it is vital to always serve for yourself and then go back and show others how to do the same. You see I had a mentor myself already. In fact, he was also a Bonner program leader when he spent his years at Morehouse. From my parents, my mentor, the rest of my supporters, and my life of developing and maturing as a young leader, I had everything I needed, but I've learned something; good leaders do great things and lead by example. Great leaders do that too but they also go and give back, train, and develop others so they can be great leaders as well. You don't let your community and support help you shine while you leave everyone else in the dark. You make them shine too. Lastly, the way I will use my interest and passions to do community service is pretty simple. I will use them to connect with people. If you think about it, "people" are the key to service. If you can connect to the people, there are limitless ways to serve and make change in the world. Just to give an examples, if that means I have to get my trombone (that I've been playing since middle school) out to bring people together for let's say a charity concert, get ready for the show. Bottom line is, the interest and passions we have, or I have since I am talking about me right now, can always be used to unify people for a greater cause.

  3. A significant moment of service that I feel most defines me is the ability to make someone's life better by putting a smile on their face. I feel as if my most notable act of community service was when I participated with my church to feed the homeless one day after church service. So many people were smiling and just thankful for what was taking place. I feel like we made a positive impact on many people lives that day, which is why it's by far my most notable act of community service. I plan to help out in the community any way I possibly can because I know how it feel to live in a state of poverty, which is why I'm determined and focused on impacting the social justice of poverty.

  4. My most significant community service project I have been involved with to date has been working to develop community garden projects throughout the city. This requires working with farmers to harvest products, working with neighborhood members to create community gardens in their area, working to create spaces to house community farmers markets, and conducting healthy lifestyle workshops. Many times low-income neighborhoods don't have access to fresh produce that according to research positively impacts the health of individuals, and the project I helped to create and manage provided such access. I hope to continue working with community service opportunities that will improve the health and lifestyle quality of families. In addition, I hope to work in some capacity to positively impact the lives of youth.

  5. My most significant moment of service that defines me the most is when I have made such a significant impact on a young person and ultimately influence them to go out and make a difference in someone else's life. My most notable act of community service took place last summer when my Kappa League brothers and I donated to a group of Nigerian teen refugee boys who were just coming to America. Seeing this group of teens, same age as me, coming to America with nothing and not having the same luxuries growing up as I did really changed my outlook. We provided the boys with clothes, toiletries, food, water, and different games for entertainment. Seeing the amazement and joy on their face changed my value of life forever. From that day forward, I promised myself to never take anything in life for granted, or life itself. My passion and interest is truly the development of young children, specifically young African American children. I plan to mentor and change the outlook of as many kids in the Atlanta area as possible to prevent them from becoming another statistic. This can be done by going to local elementary schools and middle schools and inspiring the kids while they are still at a young age and prevent them from making negative life changing decisions. I plan to show them positive ways to become successful and be a role mode to many.

  6. My most significant moment of service was getting to tutor a group of kids that dealt with major test anxieties. During my community service class each one of us served as a assigned teachers assistant, in the class i was assigned to i saw a group of kids that would excel with classwork and homework, but constantly fail test. With permission from the teacher i tutored them after school teaching them a variety of ways to take test and solve problems. after tutoring, all of them passed each test with B's and above. It felt great knowing i helped these kids show there true abilities and that i contributed to there success. I plan on using my passion for helping kids by serving at different schools throughout the college year. It feels great mentoring youth and leading by example showing them positive works leading them in a better direction.

  7. When you finish a job or project, the moment when you know you've helped make someone's life even just a little bit easier, is the moment that defines me most. As for my most notable act of community service, I don't want to make it seem any one act of service is that much more significant than another, but for me it was when I got to volunteer at the local food bank with my friends and package hundreds of boxes of supplies to provide food for the homeless. Lastly, I plan to utilize my passion to make community service, while a serious ordeal, a fun experience in which it doesn't have to be boring and so I can bring joy to the field of helping others, but also to make sure the most possible effort can be put into a project. More specifically I would also like to bring this passion to helping those who are impoverished and to try to make the lifestyle of those in poverty as easy as I can.

  9. The most significant moment of community service for is the satisfaction of knowing that I, we all as human beings, were given the ability, the power to be able to change an individual's state of being for the better. Commiting community service to a person in need of your help can cause a series of new feelings. The feelings generated includes trust, friendship, and most of all happiness. Bringing that to the table, defines community service for me. My most notable act of community service for me was being able to provide advisable pieces of information to President Obama. This is so far my most notable and most memorable act of community of service because not only was being able to advise the President on ways to help more young men of color succeed life changing for me, but President Obama made it feel as if the young men at the round table, including me, ideas were pivotal to his success as a president. Lastly, I have a passion for basketball and I plan to use this passion for community service by helping the youth to use the sport to ameliorate themselves. Basketball can create brotherhoods, and sisterhoods. It also teaches children valuable lessons such as discipline and how to trust the person next to you to help get the team to the next level.

  10. My most notable act of community service was when I was able to work at the Feminist Woman's Health Center my senior year, performing HIV test on patients daily. Georgia has the second highest number of HIV infections nationwide and I felt like I had an obligation to make sure the epidemic is known across the city of Atlanta. The summer before my senior year, I was certified to perform HIV test at the Feminist Women's Health center and I used that opportunity to give back to my community. Throughout the year, I was able to test a plethora of patients of all genders, ethnicities, and backgrounds. I was also able to hold education and awareness presentations and panels for those who wanted to get involved in there own communities. This service project has taught me so much about speaking up for those who are afraid and those living with the HIV infection. There are a number of people who are completely unaware of this rapid spreading disease and its my job to inform them as much about the epidemic as possible. It is also my job to continue to perform HIV test and encourage people to get tested so that people who are actually infected with the virus, can reduce there risk of spreading to other people. Living with HIV can be scary and I just want to continue to give a voice to those living with the virus and encourage them that you can still live long healthy lives. As a Bonner Scholar, I plan to use this service project to stay heavily involved in getting the city of Atlanta more aware about its own HIV epidemic.

  11. The most significant moment of service I would say for me has to have been the last 3 summers of my life. These past summers I have been volunteering my services at the Club Xhell Youth Life Center, where their goal is to help the youth in the Clayton County district find their voice, discover what their good at, and together we help them cultivate. Starting out as youth in this program and growing out of the program and giving back is what makes me most proud. Taking the time to guide those young one's who are lost within society or don't feel as though they don't have a voice is what defines me. My most notable act of community service is leading the next generation in the direction of success without expecting anything in return because I do believe that THE YOUTH IS OUR FUTURE! My passion is to pursue a career as a pediatric physician. So, I choose to take my interest, passion, and love for kids and continue to pour back into the community in which ever I reside in what someone so kindly took the precision time to pour inside of me. These are the most significant moments that defines me.

  12. The most significant moment of service for me is knowing that I am participating in something bigger than myself knowing that I am willing to do work to improve the quality of lives for people less fortunate. I have no notable act of service because I recognize all accounts of service as a notable act. Since I am pursuing a major in Social Policy, I am going to better urban communities by attracting money to urban areas as well as shaping the laws to where freedom isn't something that you have to earn but something you are truly born with.

  14. As of now, my most notable piece of community service was the time I served as a 4-H Cloverleaf Camp Teen Leader. A couple of weeks ago, I traveled to the largest 4-H camp in the world, Rock Eagle, to lead 50+ young 4-H'ers on the time of their lives. What makes it notable, is the fact that I can say that I was changed because of the experience. Teen Leaders are Senior 4-H'er that volunteer their time to serve as a sort of "Junior" camp counselor for the kids. You ride up with your county, and you join the campers in all activities and events. Unless you are in the 4-H program, it is difficult to explain the true joy of being a 4-H Teen Leader. I absolutely enjoy working with kids, and I flourish in settings where I get to work with other like minded people. Besides summer camp, Teen Leaders also help with all other 4-H events that involves the Cloverleaf 4-H'ers. Volunteering as a Teen Leader has definitely inspired me to work towards becoming a 4-H camp counselor, and furthering my journey with the community service club, 4-H. It might seem childish, but working with young 4-H'ers for a week at one of the best summer camps has opened my eyes to a future of volunteering with kids. In the future, I plan to use my passion of working with youth to expand my community service repertoire.

  15. At this moment, I believe my most notable piece of community service was when I actively participated in a program called Every Kid Outreach. It's a program where youth get mentored while also going out and serving the community. The most notable act I feel like I have participated in, was representing this program within a student panel. The student panel addressed healthy living in the community of Eatonville. Contributing my ideas on how to push healthy living to another level, I had the most fulfilling moment; looking out at the eager crowd genuinely soaking in MY opinions. I furthered the initiative by also attending town council meetings, providing my perspective as a youth. I plan on using my passion for mentoring to start a Non-Profit program that focuses on pushing kids out of their comfort zone to strive for success.

  16. A significant service that I feel defines me the most is the service that I devote to my church as a youth leader and head musician. I devote countless hours preparing for rehearsals, services, and various programs to ensure that the music ministry and youth department flourishes. I thoroughly enjoy music and what I do and I often think about what I could do or be doing to further the ministry even when I am not actively working. I believe that this service that I devote defines me the most. As a Boy Scout and freshman in high school, I led a service project that removed and renovated an old, vacant playground area located near the back of my high school. In order to receive the highest rank of Boy Scouts, the Eagle rank, each boy must plan and lead a service project. The project was thoroughly planned and every aspect and detail was put to paper. The project was completed in a day with over 20 volunteers. I plan to use my interests and passions in the community to not just help people who are unfortunate or struggling but to help them help themselves by providing them with the necessary tools and knowledge to succeed.

  17. A significant service that I feel defines me is the ability to make someone's life better by showing them that they can achieve the same things that I have achieved. I feel that my most notable act of community service was when I mentored a group of young delinquent boys. They were in such shock when they realized that I wasn't that much different than them. So after I told them my life story and all the trials and tribulations that I went through to able to gain academic and athletic success. They realized and figured out that they can follow my footsteps and achieve the same or even gain more success that I achieved. I feel like I had made a major life changing impact on their lives that day. I plan to help out in the community in any that I can, because I believe that the more you give to people the greater your blessings will be.

    1. My most memorable act of service was creating a soccer field for disadvantaged children in Paraguay. I witnessed children having to play soccer barefoot with a flat ball in a dirt covered field. The goals were rusty and the field, in that state, screamed danger. Naturally, I felt that what we were doing was to the benefit of the children. However, the children appreciated the gesture but did not care either way. I remember this the most because I learned something that day. I learned that the way we perceive others problems are not always a problem. I feel that this is a valuable lesson to learn because in community service the service may not always be needed no matter how much the actual servers think it is needed.
