Meet Gregory Barber Jr., Senior Bonner Intern

Greg Barber Jr. is a senior, psychology major with a concentration in African-American Studies here at Morehouse College. A native of Atlanta, Greg was raised in College Park, Georgia and graduated from Benjamin Banneker High School in 2013.

During his time at Morehouse College, he has served in many capacities: As a Bonner, he served as Hunger/Homeless Coordinator, Junior Bonner Intern and now Senior Bonner with his close brother, Keith Glass. As a student politician, Greg has been community service chair for freshman, sophomore and junior class council for the last three years and will fill the capacity as Secretary of Civic Engagement for Morehouse Student Government Association (SGA) in the fall. Greg also served as Director of #SandwichRunAUC, the largest community-service initiative for the spring semester.

Besides his foundational interest in community service, Greg is also a rising scholar in the field of psychology. During the summer between his sophomore and junior year, Greg through the Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program did research in healthy sexual communication among African-American men as well as the correlation between parental incarceration and deviant peer networks. During the fall semester of his junior year, Greg studied abroad in the African countries of Rwanda/Uganda where he completed research looking at positive coping strategies in genocide orphans. Now as a rising senior, Greg is currently at the University of Wisconsin at Madison doing research on the socialization of death and it's role in coping and bereavement.

Greg remembers a quote by his mother, "If your dreams do not scare you, then obviously your dreams are not big enough!'. Greg plans to make the 2016-2017 academic year, a year of resurgence for the Bonner Office of Community Service.

Greg poses this question to his younger brothers: Think of an issue of community interest (it can be any of your choosing but for exammple hunger/homelessness, achievement gaps in education, inadequate health care for those with lower socio-economic status). If you were given a small loan of $1,000, how would use the money to solve the issue of your choice

  1. Pleased to introduce myself, my name is Ismail Green and I'm excited for what Morehouse has to offer. If I were given a small loan of $1,000 dollars, I would invest in food products for those who are facing starvation and may be homeless. I would then find a local location where I'm able to donate the food products just to lend a helping hand.

  2. My name is Romeo Morris, and it is an honor to be able to consider myself a Bonner Scholar at Morehouse College. If I was given a small loan of 1,000 dollars I would donate it to a small non-profit organization for children, primarily because through the understanding that my generation will become one that will be sought after for a since of direction in this world I feel it will be our duty to be able to lead them in the right direction. I would not only invest my money but also my time, because money doesn't tell a person that they are loved but rather their love can be bought if never shown otherwise.

  3. Greetings everyone. My name is William Baker, another excited incoming freshman at Morehouse, and I would like to express my enthusiasm to get to know every last person on this blog as well as on campus next month. If I were given a small loan of a $1000, I would help function a career day for the community where business owners with different experience could be able to communicate words of wisdom while also sharing the secrets on how to be successful in the many career fields. Along with this, I would give homeless people a chance to clean up and put on either donated work clothes or bought work clothes so they can have the opportunity to interview for jobs during this career day. Since I was only given a loan, I would probably ask for donations to; 1 further help out the homeless people to further get there loves started. 2 To fund future entrepreneurs dreams, young or old. 3 To pay back the loan.

  4. Hello Bonner Brothers! My name is Anthony Felder, an incoming freshman at Morehouse, Business Administration major, from Orlando, FL. I look forward to getting to know you all! If I were given a loan of $1000, I would definitely invest in getting incorporated as a non-profit organization. I would form a program that would mainly mentor children in middle school and up that are living in single-parent homes. The program would be centered around achievement through education, and I would regularly schedule successful speakers to motivate the group. I would also schedule college trips to give the children exposure to their possible future, because I believe exposure is a crucial factor to actually forming long-term goals. With that being said, as my peer William pointed out, this money is still a loan, therefore I would make sure the program could start crowd-funding and build a network of donors to not only pay the loan, but also to further the resources needed to run the program.

  5. Hi, my name is D'Anthony Davis. I'm an incoming freshman at Morehouse College, majoring in Biology. I'm from Atlanta, GA. To answer the proposition at hand my socio-economic issue would be the danger in the misuse of finances that youth use for bodily markings and piercings and the potential impact on ones role in Corporate America. If I were given a loan of $1,000 I would invest the money in a social media series connecting with the most recent social media sites that would promote on going awareness of this potential millennial aged controversy.

  6. Hello! My name is Austin Walker. I am an incoming freshman from Jackson, Tennessee planning to major in psychology. I look forward to meeting and getting to know all of you in the near future. If I were given a small loan of $1,000 to solve an issue of community interest, I’d use this loan to jumpstart an organization that would educate individuals about personal finance as well as economics. I believe that the reason why so many Americans are struggling or are not as prosperous as they would like to be is because of their own lack of knowledge. There is so much information pertaining to finance and economics that is hidden from the average American that ultimately hinders wealth and prosperity. By jumpstarting this organization, many lives would be transformed through informative sessions, training, and even private consultation.

  7. Hello everyone, My name is Nicholas Porter and I am honored to be a Bonner Scholar. Can't wait to formally meet you all! If I were given a loan of $1000 I'd have to first portion my loan into two sections for two different community concerns that I have. I know that I want $500 to contribute in any way possible to help the achievement gap, particularly starting with younger children, and $500 to go to homelessness, and hunger in the community. I will use the first $500 to help younger children start on the right path by investing the money in a school's library. This will include helping to provide new books appealing and challenging to the young, and also preparing a functioning library, way too often schools have libraries that aren't being used. The other portion of the loan will help me to begin a food drive or kitchen to the homeless in the area. I will invest the money in food donors and anything else of the kind to ensure that the kitchen lasts for a while.

  8. Hello my name is Izrah Hurd,
I am glad to be a part of a community of like minded individuals. If i were given a $1,000 loan, i would address the lack of quality educational supplies in public schools. For example, Dusable High School here in Chicago, where I'm from, has recently closed their library due to lack of funding. That is something I deem unacceptable. A learning environment needs the proper tools to educated youth. This investment is an everlasting one. One that gives back continuously and that is my main purpose. Hopefully, this will develop individuals like my Bonner brothers but at a more prolific rate. This world needs that. This world needs change and it starts in the classroom. It starts with the youth.

  9. Hello all, my name is Nate Green from the District of Columbia and I am so pleased to share my passion for service as a Bonner Scholar. If I had a 1,000 dollar loan I would put it towards a mentor program because I believe a lot of things could be solved if young people had credible mentors to talk to and give advice from. I have seen a lot of situations first hand that my mentors have given me great advice because I needed an outside opinion away from my family and friends. More mentors are needed in this day and time esspecially in the black community.

  10. Greetings my Morehouse brothers! My name is Cameron Nesmith from Atlanta, Georgia and I am truly honored to have been selected as a Bonner Scholar. I am excited to be a freshmen at Morehouse College and I can't wait to get to know each and every one of you. If I were given a loan of $1,000, I would use the money to build and start a non-profit organization devoted to special needs education. Special Needs Education is an advancing profession, and given the current state of are country's educational system, change is needed. Many of the country's states have eliminated special education funding due to budget cuts and tough economic conditions, which is pretty alarming since these are often the students in the most need of help. This organization would need teachers and instructors to help students with their certain kind of disability. For example, a student with a horrific brain injury requires distinct and special services in order for them to reach there full potential. Also, this organization will use new teaching methods and introduce new concepts to bring out the best in each and every student. It is my obligation to make sure these students are exposed to their community and the world around them to show them that their just as important to this society as anyone else. By doing so, the organization would take these students on field trips and participate in service learning projects on a regular basis. All of these plans are to meant to improve a student’s educational experience and hope that they will someday become future leaders in there communities.

  11. hello my Bonner brothers! my name is Joshua McCalla from Atlanta, Georgia. if i were given a load of $1000 i would give back to my alumni high school community service club. Interact club at my school is ran by a group of teachers that have a modest passion for giving back with community service. we had monthly food and blood drives and helped at any event the community needed volunteers at, but as a small club with limited finances there were only so many things we could do to give back. One of the goals has always been to build a community homeless shelter with easy access to food and comfortablilty to any person in need, with the $1000 and countless donations from others i know i could help kickstart that into action. it is important we lead by example by showing the area how important community service is. With the homeless shelter initiation i'm hopeful that would bring people in for countless helpful acts and donation towards giving back.

  12. Good Evening Brothers! My name is Cazembe Monds, and I am a incoming freshman from Cairo, Ga. If I were given a loan of $1000, I would invest it into programs that could get our young black youth off of the streets. I hate seeing young men and women who are walking around aimlessly, without knowing their purpose in life. I would want to advertise programs like 4-H, the scouting programs, and the Boys & Girls Club. Making sure that everyone knows that they can better their communities, is one of my goals, so that's what I would want my $1000 to go towards. I'm so excited to learn more about the Bonner program, and I can't wait to meet all of you in the fall!

  13. Greetings my Morehouse brothers! My name is Malachi Best from Savannah, Georgia and I am honored and grateful to have been selected as a Bonner Scholar. If I were given a loan of $1,000, I would use the money to build a organization devoted to ending bullying. I believe that bullying is a big problem. I would love to be the one to solve that problem, but its going to take all of us to fix this problem. Anti- bullying is important to me because I was bullied. In fact, I’ve been bullied for most of my life. I’ve been bullied for being too short, too smart, and even because I am the wrong race. The less bullying there is in the world, the better life would be. So that is what I would want my $1,000 loan to go towards. I am very excited and eager to meet all of you and to be able to start another chapter in my life with my new found brothers.

  14. Hello my Bonner brothers, I am Terry Baron and I'm excited and proud to be considered for the Bonner program. Regarding the issue, if I had a loan of $1000 I would donate it to a program for people of lower socioeconomic status to make healthier foods more accessible to them. With access to healthier foods the poor would be at lower risk for diseases like cancer and diabetes. While I definitely believe that healthcare should be made more accessible to the poor, with less health problems among them, healthcare would be less needed. Aside from just my donation I would personally like to see if food stamps for higher quality foods could be provided, and if not, I would like to spend time to make sure the people themselves are getting/choosing the healthier options at all times.

  16. Hello fellow Bonner Brothers, my name is James D. Coles, IV, and I am excited to be a Bonner Scholar and look forward to meeting all of you upon arrival to Morehouse College in the Fall.

I am a native of Lexington, Kentucky, but have resided in East Lansing, Michigan since the age of three. If I were granted a $1000 loan, I would utilize the money to collaborate with logistic companies to assist in transporting donated water to assist with the Flint water crisis. Although, I live in East Lansing, the Flint water crisis has impacted the entire region and the entire state, and as such I believe it is my obligation to assist this crisis. I believe that by assisting with the water crisis I would be able to reach beyond merely just the water crisis, but directly impact families and especially children who are our future scholars and leaders.
